New Canaan, CT, January 10 2003 – The first of many shipments of stethoscopes has arrived at AmeriCares. The delivery is the first donation from a program called WorldScopes. Launched by the American Medical Association and the AMA Foundation, WorldScopes is the first in a series of “Caring for Humanity” projects designed to promote and strengthen humanitarian service among physicians. The stethoscopes will be sent worldwide to health care professionals who do not have ready access to this basic medical instrument.
Ken Baker, the AmeriCares liaison with WorldScopes, said the stethoscopes will “make a profound difference” in communities where basic medical resources are scarce.
A number of the instruments have already gone to AmeriCares Free Clinics. “In quality,” said Karen Gottlieb, the director of the clinics, “these are a step up for us so you can imagine what they will mean in the hands of medical professionals in impoverished nations.”
WorldScopes hopes to collect and distribute 100,000 stethoscopes worldwide.
