AmeriCares Sends Aid to Uzbekistan

  • February 4, 2003

New Canaan, CT, February 4 2003 – AmeriCares announced today that it would deliver approximately $4,000,000 worth of medicines, medical supplies and nutritional supplements to Uzbekistan to benefit those in need around the country. Since its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Uzbekistan has been working to develop an independent health care system. In support of these efforts, AmeriCares will be working directly with the Uzbek non-governmental organization, the Soglum Avlod Uchun Foundation. The SAU Foundation was founded in 1993 with a mandate to improve the health and well-being of the Uzbek people.

The air transport is being sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and is scheduled to arrive in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Thursday, January 16, 2003. AmeriCares is very grateful to have the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of State, and the support of Ambassador John Herbst and the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent.

Amy Daniels, AmeriCares’ Uzbekistan Project Manager, and consultant Sergei Albert, will work with the SAU Foundation and the Uzbek Ministry of Health to distribute the humanitarian aid throughout the country. The aid will be dispersed in many regions and rural villages, as well as larger specialized institutions in the capital city.

Since it was established in 1982, AmeriCares has distributed more than $2.9 billion dollars in aid to 137 countries, the U.S. among them. Liz Griffin, Director of Communications Phone: 1.800.486.4357
