New Canaan, CT, October 1 2003 – Barbara Bush, the ambassador-at-large for AmeriCares, officially opens the humanitarian organization’s new headquarters in Stamford Tuesday (Oct. 28) after a breakfast appearance in Greenwich to promote her new book, “Reflections: Life After the White House.”
Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy plans to attend the inauguration of the new headquarters at 88 Hamilton Ave. in Stamford, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In her book (Scribner, 384, pages, $28, paperback $16), Mrs. Bush describes AmeriCares as an “incredible organization” and recounts how she and her husband George have seen the impact of the work of AmeriCares firsthand in the U.S. and the far-flung reaches of the world like Croatia, Guatemala and Honduras. The former president was a classmate of Bob Macauley, the founder and chairman of AmeriCares.
The Tuesday ceremony officially transitions AmeriCares from a New Canaan base the organization has operated from for 21 years to a new location that offers expanded office space and a 50,000-square-foot warehouse on the same site. Up to now the warehousing for AmeriCares occupied 30,000 square feet in Milford, 30 miles away.
Tuesday’s function follows the second AmeriCares airlift of medicine and supplies for the desperate population of Liberia where civil-strife has displaced 500,000 people and created conditions one AmeriCares staff member depicts as the worst he has ever seen. The first airlift reached the capital of Monrovia in late September.
Since it was established in 1982, AmeriCares has delivered more than $3.2 billion in emergency relief and health care to the disadvantaged in 137 countries without regard for race, creed or political orientation.
