AmeriCares Benefits From Charity Golf Event

Former Presidents Bush and Clinton Join Greg Norman to Raise Tsunami Relief

Stamford, CT, March 11 2005 – AmeriCares, the humanitarian relief agency, benefited from a recent golf tournament hosted by pro golfer Greg Norman and former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. The charity golf event, Three Friends: One Goal was held at the Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida, on March 9.

Continuing their nation-wide efforts to raise money for the victims of the Dec. 26 tsunami, former presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton volunteered to golf with up to 72 invited players, donating $30,000 each, hosted by pro golfer Greg Norman on his own, self-designed golf course.

AmeriCares is one of two charities to benefit from the estimated $2 million raised.

Despite the torrential rain, Norman, Bush, and Clinton played through to complete their commitment to raise funds for the tsunami survivors. Mr. Clinton postponed his upcoming surgery to accommodate what he considered to be an important event.

“We live in a global society,” said Norman, just before the event, “and the tragic earthquake and tsunami that struck South Asia and East Africa touched all of us. Three Friends: One Goal- provides an opportunity to help the millions who were directly impacted by these horrific events. We have all been adversely affected by Mother Nature’s wrath at some point, myself included,” he added, referring to the four hurricanes that struck South Florida in 2004.

After the event, Bush praised AmeriCares for their humanitarian efforts, citing his involvement with the charity over the years, starting from the days of his administration. “We are tremendously grateful for the commitment of the former presidents and Greg Norman,” said Curtis R. Welling, President and CEO of AmeriCares. “This support will be used to help restore the healthcare infrastructure in those countries hardest hit.”
