As the floodwaters that hit the Indonesian capital of Jakarta last week continue to recede, AmeriCares is distributing clean-up kits to aid in the recovery.
More than 380,000 people were displaced from their homes by the flooding, which was caused by several days of heavy rainfall, causing rivers to overflow throughout the region. The floodwaters rose in some places more than 12 feet, blocking major transportation routes and necessitating dramatic rooftop rescues of people from their flooded houses.
AmeriCares workers in Indonesia are distributing 1,000 clean-up kits to affected homeowners, businesses and schools, each containing a mop and bucket, rubber gloves, sponges, trash bags, disinfectant and other supplies. The supplies are being distributed and will be used by 4,000 families in the hardest hit areas of East Jakarta and South Jakarta.
“Now that people are returning to their homes, they face several days of cleaning to rid their houses of mud and debris,” said David Prettyman, country director for AmeriCares in Indonesia. “Our donations will make this easier for thousands of people, and we will continue to monitor the situation in the coming week.”
