The obstetrician Dr. Sampath Rodrigo of Tangalle Hospital in Sri Lanka was overjoyed: “Who would have thought I would use a Doppler ultrasound in Tangalle Hospital?” Although one of the first physicians in the country trained to use the machine, there were few to be had, until a donation from AmeriCares.
Nadeesha, one of his patients, is 39 weeks pregnant and has been coming to Tangalle Hospital in Southern Sri Lanka during the length of her pregnancy. Tangalle Hospital was one hospital greatly affected by the tsunami with the massive influx of patients with injuries.
Dr. Rodrigo pointed out that Nadeesha is now able to get a quick, accurate prenatal reading of her condition, and possibly avert an unnecessary caesarian section.
This $40,000 post-tsunami donation is part of a larger AmeriCares donation to Tangalle hospital, in which we provided equipment and assisted our partners, Aloka Trust and Buckingham Trust, with renovations to the hospital.
