The AmeriCares / Super Bowl XLII Connection!

  • February 7, 2008

Bicycles used during pre-game energy event are donated to AmeriCares

AmeriCares was selected as the charity of choice to receive over 30 bicycles, generators and batteries used during AMP Energy drink’s Super Bowl pre-game event, which took place over four days, from January 31 through February 3.  AMP Energy drink generated enough energy to power the Fox broadcast through 30 minutes of its live Super Bowl pre-game show and enough energy to power its four-day event.

AMP Energy recruited hundreds of people from the Phoenix area to supply their “human energy” by pedaling 42 stationary bikes over 40 hours in honor of Super Bowl XLII. Each bicycle was equipped with a generator and battery mounted to it in order to convert energy into electricity; the energy flowing from the generators was stored in the batteries. At the end of each day, the power was uploaded from the batteries to the Phoenix, Arizona power grid, culminating in enough energy to power 30-minutes of the pre-game show and the AMP Energy event.

“AmeriCares is a great partner and a wonderful organization that has provided important resources to millions of people around the world,” said Lauren Hobart, VP of marketing for AMP Energy. “We know that AmeriCares will make sure this donation is used to make a difference and help people in need.”

Bikes and Batteries in the warehouse
The bikes and batteries quickly arrived at the AmeriCares warehouse, and wait for their next life helping others.

AMP Energy donated the thirty bicycles, 37 pedal-watt generators and over 100 batteries from the event to AmeriCares, who will distribute the generous donations to one of its partners.  Bicycles are an essential mode of transportation in remote communities and previous AmeriCares donations have been instrumental in providing home-based care to patients in rural areas in Malawi.

“This donation will enable AmeriCares to distribute the bikes and generators to one of our partners,” said Rachel Granger, vice president of global partnerships. “In many countries, something as simple as a bike can make a world of difference in providing health care, particularly in the most remote areas, where access to medicines is minimal.  We have provided bikes in the past and found them to be very beneficial in allowing health care workers to access patients.”

AMP Energy is a product of Purchase, N.Y.-based Pepsi-Cola North America, the refreshment beverage unit of PepsiCo, Inc., in the United States and Canada.
