Shipment likely first of many to devastated area
STAMFORD, CT – A truck carrying emergency medical supplies pulled out of a Connecticut warehouse this morning en route to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York and ultimately, Yangon, Myanmar. AmeriCares – a nonprofit international relief organization – is sending the aid to help bring relief and comfort to the victims of Cyclone Nargis. The shipment contains medicines such as antibiotics, analgesics, ointments and multivitamins as well as medical equipment and supplies to treat the immediate needs of those injured and to help prevent the anticipated spread of illness and disease throughout the region.
“With each passing day, the death toll rises and the situation in Myanmar becomes more dire for the survivors of Cyclone Nargis,” said Curt Welling, president and chief executive officer of AmeriCares. “Access to Myanmar remains an issue, but AmeriCares stands ready to deliver aid at the earliest opportunity. AmeriCares staff arrived in the region today. In addition to distributing medical aid, we will work on the ground with partner organizations to restore the health and well-being of the people of Myanmar. Given the magnitude of the destruction, our focus now and for the immediate future will be on providing whatever aid is needed, wherever it is needed most.”
