AmeriCares emergency response team is closely monitoring Hurricane Ike as it approaches Houston, Galveston and The Gulf Coast. Using lessons learned from Katrina, we will send emergency response and logistics staff as well as a fully equipped mobile health clinic to the Galveston area on Saturday.
Working with local groups, AmeriCares has identified other possible tactical relief solutions from water, medicines and basic needs to an emergency field hospital. We are well poised to mobilize additional teams of health care professionals and emergency responders, as well as to deliver medicines and medical supplies.
Hurricane victims often suffer from a severe lack of safe drinking water. “While there can be flood water everywhere, it’s polluted with dangerous contaminants that make people sick,” reports Jonathan Hodgdon, AmeriCares emergency response expert. Safe bottled drinking water donated by our partner Nestlé, is already on the way to Texas.
AmeriCares will continue to provide updated information on the support we are providing to the survivors of Hurricane Ike in Galveston, Houston and the Gulf Coast.
