AmeriCares to Help Restock Humanitarian Aid Organizations in the Congo

  • November 10, 2008

AmeriCares is now sending life-saving health care supplies to the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) where international aid organizations were recently ransacked by rebel fighters. Their shelves stripped bare of food, water, medicines and other critical aid. Many organizations were forced to stop working and withdraw their staff as violence spilled into what had once been a safe haven.

Enough water purification sachets will be sent to help make sure at least 100,000 people have access to safe drinking water.

The fighting has made things very dangerous for aid workers, but even worse for people in need of medical care. With thousands of newly displaced people, many of them women and children, the need for help is greater than ever.

AmeriCares will continue to work with our partners on the ground to identify additional medicines and medical supplies that are most critically needed. The United Nations is working to solidify an aid corridor so that displaced people can have access to health care, food, water and other assistance without fear.

Since war first broke out in 1998, more than 5.4 million people have died due to war-related violence, hunger and disease.
