With Zimbabwe’s cholera death toll rapidly climbing above 800 and more than 15,000 cases reported, AmeriCares is sending vital medicines and supplies to help save lives and reduce the spread of the deadly disease.
AmeriCares is preparing to ship medicines and relief supplies to Zimbabwe from our warehouses in the United States, the Netherlands and India. The medicines will help local hospitals and clinics address the cholera outbreak and replenish medicines depleted during the health crisis. AmeriCares is also sending water purification sachets which will provide clean water for thousands of displaced people.

The cholera outbreak has spread throughout Zimbabwe and is spilling over the borders into neighboring countries. Nearly 900,000 of the people of Zimbabwe are estimated to be displaced, many due to severe drought and civil strife.

“The cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe is particularly heartbreaking considering the food crisis, broken economy, political strife, and the AIDS pandemic.” said Jessica Ginger, who joined AmeriCares as an associate after volunteering with AIDS orphans in Zimbabwe. “We are striving to bring some measure of hope to Zimbabweans with these shipments of medicines and supplies.”
Cholera is responsible for some of the most needless deaths in the world, many of them children under five years old. As many as 30% of patients are dying from the infection in remote areas of Zimbabwe – yet treated quickly, cholera kills fewer than 1% of patients.
Since 1997, AmeriCares has given more than $25 million in humanitarian, disaster and medical aid to the people of Zimbabwe. AmeriCares has helped Zimbabwe with relief supplies ranging from medicines, medical supplies and nutritional support. AmeriCares is also reaching out to other partners on the ground to determine what additional support can be sent in the near future.
