AmeriCares is sending truckloads of bottled water and 1,200 blankets to help families recovering from a deadly ice storm that has already claimed 55 lives.
Hundreds of thousands of residents across Kentucky, Missouri and Arkansas are still without power, struggling to keep warm. Families who heat their homes with stoves or use generators for power run the risk of contracting carbon monoxide poisoning. Already several deaths in the region have been blamed on the colorless, odorless gas.
Thousands of families have left their homes for the safety of emergency shelters. The Christian Appalachian Project, a partner organization, will distribute the blankets to shelters throughout Kentucky serving residents displaced by the storm.
Local relief agencies in the area also report drinking water supplies are running dangerously low. Public health officials are urging residents to conserve water and some have issued an advisory to boil tap water before drinking it. That’s why AmeriCares is working with Nestlé Waters North America to deliver bottled water to the hard hit region. The first truckload has already arrived, with at least 6 more truckloads on the way.
AmeriCares emergency response experts are monitoring the storm recovery efforts to determine if additional aid is needed.
