Zimbabwe’s Cholera Epidemic Rages On

  • March 16, 2009

As the world’s eyes are on Zimbabwe’s political crisis, its people continue to face a growing epidemic. The widespread cholera outbreak has claimed over 4,000 lives and infected nearly 90,000 people, making it Africa’s deadliest outbreak in 15 years.

AmeriCares has sent significant aid and pledges to continue to help the disease-ravaged people of Zimbabwe until the cholera outbreak ends. Since the outbreak began, AmeriCares has sent:

  • Medicines and medical supplies airlifted including antibiotics, pain medicine and sanitizer;
  • Two shipments of PŪR™ Purifier of Water, sufficient to provide over 3 million gallons of clean and safe drinking water for people at risk of contracting cholera; and
  • 20,000 units of lifesaving IV solutions and IV supplies to administer the IVs, more than half are specifically designed to treat children.

We are preparing our next shipment, which will include:

  • 1,000 bottles of lifesaving antibiotics that cure cholera infections;
  • 2,400 units of children’s rehydration therapy; and
  • Additional supplies such as syringes to help administer IVs, high-nutrition liquid meal replacements, prenatal vitamins and hygiene products.

Since 1997, AmeriCares has delivered more than $25 million in humanitarian, disaster and medical aid to the people of Zimbabwe. AmeriCares has helped Zimbabwe with  assistance ranging from medicines, medical supplies and nutritional support.

Help save lives in Zimbabwe and around the world.  »
