AmeriCares Celebrates World Water Day

  • March 20, 2009

AmeriCares joins in focusing the world’s attention on the importance of freshwater. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 3,900 children die every day from a lack of safe drinking water. Each year, over a billion thirsty people have no choice but to drink polluted water that puts them at risk for deadly disease.

Around the World

To millions of people worldwide, the gift of clean water is the gift of life. In the time it takes the average person to read this article, 20 children will have died from dehydration.

That’s why AmeriCares and Procter & Gamble (P&G) have worked together to increase access to clean drinking water by delivering PŪR™ Purifier of Water to survivors of natural and man-made disasters. PŪR is a powder solution that when mixed with contaminated water, removes many pollutants, viruses and bacteria – including bacteria that causes cholera, a deadly disease that has recently claimed the lives of thousands in Zimbabwe.

AmeriCares and P&G have strengthened their capacity to increase access to safe drinking water as part of their commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative. The partnership has helped victims of the Southeast Asian tsunami, floods and earthquakes, as well as refugees in Darfur and victims of disease outbreaks in Africa, the Middle East and most recently in Zimbabwe.

Here at Home

When natural disasters strike here at home, clean drinking water is an essential and immediate need. Nestlé Waters North America and AmeriCares share a long history of partnership dating back to 1989. The company has since created an emergency response process to speed delivery of water after hurricanes, floods and other disasters.

Together, survivors of some of America’s greatest emergencies have been able to rely on safe drinking water and avoid further tragedy. From deadly hurricanes in the East, tornadoes in the Heartland and Wildfires in California, AmeriCares and Nestlé Waters North America are working hard to ensure families and first-responders from coast-to-coast can count on safe bottled water in times of crisis.
