  • June 23, 2011

Humanitarian Crisis Worsens for Tens of Thousands of Refugees

Amid the worsening humanitarian crisis in refugee camps and border areas, AmeriCares has rushed a fourth shipment containing $5.6 million in urgently requested medical aid to help Libyan civilians who have fled the war-torn country. Thousands have perished in Libya’s ongoing fierce civil conflict, tens of thousands are injured, and 650,000 men, women, and children have fled the violence.  More than 65,000 Libyans live in refugee camps and communities on the border in Tunisia, and 25,000 are staying in host communities in Egypt.  Medical supplies, food and water are in dangerously low supply for these refugees, creating a humanitarian crisis of staggering proportions. Help us deliver lifesaving aid to the people of Libya and others in crisis around the world. »This most recent shipment consists of more than 5,000 pounds of crucial medicines and supplies to help address critical needs and alleviate the suffering of people injured or displaced in the conflict, including:

  • 33,200 courses of treatment for acute pain management (donors include McNeil Consumer Healthcare)
  • 4,000 monthly courses of treatment for diabetics
  • 3,660 monthly courses of treatment for cardiovascular disease (donors include Merck & Co.)
  • 300 courses of treatment of anti-infective agents, including antibiotics to treat acute infections (donated by Hospira)
  • Medicines and supplies for surgery
  • Wound care and dermatological creams.

This shipment arrived in Cairo for delivery to our partner, International Medical Corps (IMC) in Benghazi for use in hospitals and by IMC doctors to provide critical care to thousands of people in Eastern Libya. Hospital resources are strained and are currently operating at 10-25 percent capacity and overwhelmed by the vast number of refugees in desperate need of chronic care medicines, including diabetic and cardiovascular medicines.  Five mobile clinics will treat patients requiring immediate medical attention, including war-wounded individuals in the area. Nearly $7 Million in Lifesaving AidSince the beginning of the conflict, AmeriCares has sent a total of four shipments containing $7 million in critically needed medicines and supplies to partners working on the ground in Libya providing vital health care to people in desperate need.
