$5.6 Million in Lifesaving Medical Aid to Help Families in Crisis
On the day that rebels entered Tripoli, seeking to end Muammar el Qaddafi’s 40-year rule in Libya, AmeriCares confirmed the arrival in Benghazi of a fourth shipment containing $5.6 million in medical aid to help displaced civilians struggling to survive. As the war moves closer to a resolution, the crisis is far from over for 900,000 children and adults who have fled the violence, many living in refugee camps with little or no access to basic health care. Hospital resources are strained, and medical supplies are in dangerously low supply for this vulnerable population. The shipment will be used by our partner in hospitals and by doctors to provide critical care to thousands of people in Eastern Libya. Five mobile clinics will treat patients requiring immediate medical attention, including war-wounded individuals in the area. Throughout the 6-month-long violent civil conflict, AmeriCares has sent a series of shipments containing $7 million in critically needed medicines and supplies to partners working on the ground in Libya.
