People’s City Mission in Lincoln, Nebraska is one of more than 400 U.S. free clinics supported by AmeriCares. Since July 2010, AmeriCares has delivered eight shipments of aid to People’s City Mission, including medications and medical supplies worth over $70,000.
The Need
Established in 2001, the clinic has provided free healthcare services to impoverished, uninsured residents in the city of Lincoln, and throughout Lancaster County, NE. The population of uninsured is estimated at 50,000, and in 2010 alone, the clinic received more than 9,000 patient visits, delivering $1 million in medical services.
Among its staff of 180 volunteers are medical students from Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska universities who lend a helping hand while getting practical medical experience. In addition to primary care, the clinic provides a comprehensive range of health care services including chronic care for respiratory illness, diabetes, and heart disease, mental health, women’s health, dental, and vision care.
Another core focus of People’s City Mission is to feed and shelter more than 1,800 people who lack the ability to provide for their own housing within the city of Lincoln.
In addition, Lincoln is home to dozens of ethnic groups, and is one of our nation’s top five destinations for asylum seekers, refugees, and other resettled individuals – a population that often lacks access to health insurance and basic medical care.
