Stamford, Conn. – Nov. 9, 2012 – Diapers.com, the largest online store for baby care supplies in the U.S., has donated nearly 60,000 diapers to AmeriCares for the smallest survivors of Hurricane Sandy. AmeriCares is delivering the diapers to the hardest-hit areas of New Jersey and New York, where displaced families have urgent needs for basic necessities such as baby care products. The Oct. 29 storm knocked out power to millions of homes, left tens of thousands homeless and killed more than 100 people.
“In some of the most devastated areas the power is still out, and families are still living in shelters more than a week later. Our first priority is providing them with the basic necessities,” said Kate Dischino, AmeriCares Manager of Emergency Response. “These diapers will give families with young children one less worry in this time of crisis.”
AmeriCares relief workers have been working nonstop to fill the immediate needs of clinics and shelters along the East Coast. AmeriCares has delivered 34 aid shipments in the past week, supplying shelters and aid distribution centers with family emergency kits, bottled water, blankets, first aid kits, flashlights and cleaning supplies. The humanitarian aid organization also has a 40-foot mobile clinic traveling to the hardest hit areas of New York City, offering storm victims free flu shots, tetanus vaccines and medical care.
AmeriCares has delivered medical relief and humanitarian assistance to millions affected by natural and man-made disasters worldwide for 30 years. In the past year alone, AmeriCares responded to several emergencies in the U.S., including Hurricane Isaac in Mississippi and Louisiana, tornadoes in Kentucky and Indiana and wildfires in Colorado. In 2011, in response to one of the worst tornado seasons in decades, AmeriCares delivered nearly $3 million in aid for disaster survivors all across the country.
