Stamford, Conn. – Nov. 21, 2012 – AmeriCares is sponsoring Thanksgiving dinner at the Nassau Community College shelter housing Long Islanders displaced by Superstorm Sandy. A traditional turkey dinner with all of the trimmings will be prepared for about 500 people with a grant from the nonprofit disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization as part of its Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. About 300 people are currently staying in the shelter, but hundreds more rely on it for meals each day.
“Some families have been at the shelter for weeks and don’t know when they can return home,” said AmeriCares Emergency Response Manager Kate Dischino, who will be helping to serve the dinner on Thursday. “With the holiday approaching, we want to make sure they have a nice, festive celebration to look forward to. We’re hoping it will be a bright spot between the trauma of the storm and the long recovery ahead.”
The dinner is AmeriCares latest aid effort to support the Nassau Community College shelter, operated by the American Red Cross. AmeriCares previously delivered 50 special needs cots, a dozen wheelchairs, a refrigerator to store insulin for diabetic patients, and more than 1,400 pounds of first aid supplies and over-the-counter medicines to the facility.
AmeriCares emergency response experts have been working nonstop since the hurricane, delivering medicines and relief supplies to shelters and aid distribution centers across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. To date, the organization has delivered 70 aid shipments in response to the storm, providing medical aid, family emergency kits, bottled water, blankets, first aid kits, flashlights and cleaning supplies. AmeriCares also deployed its mobile clinic to the hardest hit areas of New York City, offering storm victims free flu shots, tetanus vaccines and medical care.
