AmeriCares Responds to Flooding in Northern India

  • June 20, 2013

MUMBAI – June 20, 2013 – AmeriCares is preparing to deliver medical aid for survivors of the recent flooding in northern India that has devastated Uttarakhand and stranded thousands of people in the northern part of the country.

The flooding in recent days increases the risk of malaria, cholera, typhoid fever, leptospirosis, hepatitis A and dengue fever as well as skin infections that spread easily in contaminated floodwaters. AmeriCares aid includes medicines to treat the most common flood-related health conditions, as well as medicines for patients with chronic diseases who don’t have access to their medications while they are displaced.

AmeriCares India dispatches medical teams to provide emergency medical care for disaster survivors in response to floods, cyclones, earthquakes and other disasters. The organization has responded to dozens of emergencies over the years, including the Kashmir Valley avalanches in 2012, the Orissa floods in 2011 and the Sikkim earthquake in 2011.
