New online resource aims to improve care for the uninsured
Stamford, Conn. – July 1, 2013 – AmeriCares has launched Safetynetcenter.org, a new and improved online resource for clinics and health centers across the United States serving the uninsured and underinsured. The site contains educational materials on a variety of clinical topics including oral health, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and more. It also serves as a portal that allows safety net providers to share resources they develop with peers.
Safetynetcenter.org replaces Freeclinicstoday.org, a site launched in 2011 to assist free clinics in the delivery of high-quality, patient-focused health care. The new site takes a broader approach and offers new information on facility management and the changing health care landscape that is of interest to a wider audience of health care providers serving low-income patients, including federally qualified health centers and rural health clinics.
“Safetynetcenter.org allows us to better meet the needs of our rapidly growing network which includes a wide variety of health care facilities,” said Leslie McGuire, AmeriCares director of U.S. programs. “The new site has a more user-friendly design, better navigation and expanded content which we hope will become a valued resource for health care providers serving the most vulnerable patients.”
The new site includes information about AmeriCares U.S. Medical Assistance Program which provides donated medicines and medical supplies to more than 550 free clinics, community health centers, health departments and social service organizations serving low-income and uninsured patients.
AmeriCares created the site with a generous grant from the GE Foundation, which supports programs increasing access to care for underserved populations in the U.S. through its Developing HealthTM program. Since 2010, GE Foundation has supported AmeriCares work in the United States with donations totaling more than $1.4 million.
