At AmeriCares, we ensure that humanitarian aid is put into the hands of people who need it most. We uphold this standard by remaining transparent throughout the logistical process from start to finish—from receiving donations, to building targeted shipments, to delivering aid in the field and then, finally, monitoring in-country distributions to pre-qualified health care facilities and practitioners.AmeriCares history of supply chain management—from warehouse to local distribution and monitoring—demonstrates the efficiency and effectiveness of our gift-in-kind model.In fiscal year 2013, we delivered $25 million of aid to patients in Uzbekistan, a transitional economy where access to basic medicines remains limited. Through our long-standing partnership with the local NGO, Soglom Avlod Uchun Foundation, our aid reaches low-income patients in hospitals, mother-child clinics, rehabilitation centers and orphanages. AmeriCares also sponsors community-specific public health initiatives and the Uzbekistan “health train,” which transports medical care to some of the country’s most isolated communities.
1. Let’s begin in the warehouseAmeriCares is preparing a new shipment for Uzbekistan from our Stamford, CT headquarters and warehouse. The shipment contains critically-needed medicines and medical supplies, such as IV solutions, along with apparel, soap and toiletries. Since the Uzbek government provides free emergency care to all citizens, there is an ongoing need for AmeriCares donated medicines and supplies. The Boeing Company2. Then we ship it…We partner with airlines that provide us with free humanitarian cargo shipments to Uzbekistan, where it is offloaded and distributed to local health care partners. At the time this photo was taken, one of the planes has already arrived in Uzbekistan with our aid in the cargo, and another, stocked with crucial medicines, was on the way.
3. The aid arrives to help people in need…When the first shipment arrived, two AmeriCares staff were on the ground in Tashkent in order to help our local NGO partner review the cargo and distribute the medical donations to hospitals and clinics. Our team met with several beneficiaries of the shipment, including a woman hospitalized for heavy bleeding and a man recovering from severe wounds following a recent car accident. Our shipments enable Uzbek practitioners to better support patients during their recovery and rehabilitation; our donations improve and save lives.
4. Meanwhile back at home…AmeriCares has maintained a productive and fruitful, five-year relationship with the Government of Uzbekistan. In fact, while the delivery process was underway, the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to the United Nations visited our warehouse to review additional shipments headed to Tashkent and to express appreciation for the aid we provide.Since 1997, AmeriCares has delivered more than $220 million worth of aidto Uzbekistan.
