The massive flooding has claimed nearly 200 lives, damaged or destroyed more than 50,000 homes…As 1.4 million people struggle amid devastating monsoon flooding striking Pakistan for the fourth consecutive year, AmeriCares ensured that relief supplies were in place even before the disaster, so that crucial aid could reach survivors as quickly as possible.The massive flooding has claimed nearly 200 lives, damaged or destroyed more than 50,000 homes, and washed away roads, bridges and crops. Punjab, Balochistan , and Sindh provinces were especially hard-hit, with many families were left homeless and with little or no belongings. The rains are expected to continue into September.
In advance of the floods, AmeriCares awarded a Global Prepositioning Grant to partner, Human Appeal International. Grant funding was used to purchase emergency supplies that were available for distribution in late August to help 425 displaced families – a total of about 1,700 people in hard-hit Punjab province. The relief items included essential personal care products, mosquito nets, storage containers, sleeping mats and cooking sets, as well as water purifiers to reduce the spread of water-borne diseases.The grant is part of AmeriCares Global Prepositioning Initiative, aimed at putting emergency aid in place before disaster strikes, to drastically reduce response time. The recent floods marked the fourth consecutive year that Pakistan has been inundated by crisis-level flooding. Since then, AmeriCares sent more than $6 million in vital humanitarian aid and funded medical camps and projects to distribute relief items, drill wells, install water pumps, stock medical camps with medicines, and rebuild damaged health facilities.Read MoreDonate Now
