Stamford, Conn. – Sept. 17, 2013 – AmeriCares has deployed an emergency response expert to Colorado to assess needs and coordinate deliveries of medicines and relief supplies for flood survivors. More than 18,000 homes have been damaged, nearly 12,000 people have been evacuated and eight people have died since the flooding began last week. Twenty four emergency shelters have opened across the state and search and rescue efforts continue for the 648 people still unaccounted for.
“Our expert is on the ground assessing urgent needs,” said Garrett Ingoglia, AmeriCares vice president of emergency response. “As the disaster continues to unfold, we will work with first responders to meet the needs of ill, injured and displaced survivors.”
AmeriCares keeps medicines, first aid kits, cleaning products and other relief supplies on hand in its Stamford, Conn., warehouse for emergencies. The global health and disaster relief organization’s response to flood disasters often includes medicines to treat flood-related health conditions, family emergency kits including hygiene and personal care items for displaced survivors, household cleanup kits with supplies to help families returning to their flood-damaged homes, as well as medicines for patients with chronic diseases who don’t have access to their medications while displaced. AmeriCares works with hundreds of safety net clinics, food banks and volunteer organizations to distribute relief supplies to survivors.
AmeriCares has delivered medical relief and humanitarian assistance globally to millions affected by natural and man-made disasters for more than 30 years. The aid organization has a long history of responding to U.S. disasters including the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Joplin tornado in 2011 and the 2012 Colorado wildfires. Most recently, its relief workers have been assisting survivors of Hurricane Sandy and the Oklahoma tornadoes.
