Stamford, Conn. – Oct. 18, 2013 – AmeriCares is working with partner organizations to provide critical medicines and relief supplies to survivors of this week’s deadly earthquake in the Philippines. Relief supplies such as water purification tablets, personal hygiene items, baby care products and tarps will be distributed to an estimated 1,200 survivors in the coming days. Medicines and supplies donated by AmeriCares will also support a makeshift hospital in Cebu where patients in a damaged hospital were transferred to a gymnasium.
The 7.1-magnitude earthquake killed more than 160 people and injured 375 more in Bohol province and neighboring Cebu on Oct.15. AmeriCares emergency response experts immediately reached out to partner organizations working in the region with offers of assistance. AmeriCares is working with Hope Worldwide Philippines and the Order of Malta Philippines on the response.
“Homes collapsed or were buried by landslides, tens of thousands of people have sought shelter in evacuation centers and health centers have been destroyed,” said AmeriCares Vice President of Emergency Response Garrett Ingoglia. “Our medicines and emergency relief supplies will help families suffering in the aftermath of this destructive earthquake.”
AmeriCares has been aiding survivors of natural disasters, political conflict and extreme poverty around the world for more than 30 years, saving lives and restoring health and hope. The disaster relief and global health organization has been delivering aid to the Philippines since 1985 in response to emergencies as well as ongoing needs. To date, AmeriCares has delivered $229 million in medicines, medical supplies and humanitarian aid to the Philippines, including aid for survivors of Typhoon Bopha last year, Typhoon Washi in 2011, back-to-back typhoons in 2009 and Typhoon Frank in 2008.
