When Linda, age 63, came to the Rocksprings Clinic in November 2012, she had been suffering from chronically elevated blood pressure for over 14 years. Her examination also revealed that one of her heart valves was not functioning correctly and leaking, causing her to experience extra heart beats that could be fatal if not treated. In addition, her elevated blood cholesterol was not under adequate control. Linda is retired, and therefore has no health insurance. Her friends referred her to the Rocksprings Clinic. The Rocksprings Clinic is a free, volunteer-run facility founded in 2008 to meet the needs of the uninsured and underserved in middle Georgia. The clinic serves residents in the surrounding four counties where the average household income is $18,000-$24,000 and 12–20 percent of people live below the poverty level. The clinic’s medical director, Dr. W. Stephen Taunton describes the impact of AmeriCares donations on this clinic as “HUGE in the scope of what they provide for our patients. We could never offer the quality of care that we do for our patients without this outstanding help.”The clinic is open one afternoon per week and sees on average 350 patient visits per quarter. In addition, the clinic provides their patients with almost $500,000 worth of medications quarterly through donations from AmeriCares and a variety of patient assistance programs. According to Linda, “Rocksprings Clinic has been such a blessing. I have received quality and compassionate care which I could not have received anywhere else. I am so thankful for the whole staff and all they have done for me.”The medicine was donated by AmeriCares and provided through the Boehringer Ingelheim Product Donation Program.
