Stamford, Conn. – Nov. 26, 2013 – AmeriCares is delivering 300 doses of Tdap vaccine to help protect tornado survivors and volunteers clearing debris in Massac and Tazewell counties. The nonprofit global health and disaster relief organization is shipping 200 doses to Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis, Ill., for nurses going door-to-door in the hardest hit neighborhoods vaccinating residents and volunteers clearing debris. The Tazewell County Health Department will receive 100 doses of Tdap vaccine for families staying in shelters and cleaning up damaged homes in Washington, Pekin and East Peoria.
Tdap vaccine boosts immunity to protect patients from tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. Sifting through rubble with twisted metal and other sharp objects that can cause puncture wounds increases the risk of tetanus infections. All of the vaccines were donated by Sanofi Pasteur.

AmeriCares also supports more than 600 safety net clinics serving the uninsured and underinsured all across the United States with donated medicines and medical supplies.
