$2.2 Million in Medical Aid Headed to the Philippines

  • December 6, 2013

Largest shipment to date brings typhoon aid total to over $5 million

Stamford, Conn. – Dec. 6, 2013 – A $2.2 million aid shipment left AmeriCares Connecticut warehouse this afternoon packed with desperately needed medical aid for typhoon survivors in the Philippines. The shipment – AmeriCares largest to date for Typhoon Haiyan survivors – includes medical supplies, antibiotics, nutritional supplements and medications for patients with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and severe arthritis. The medicines are headed to health care facilities throughout the affected region. To date, AmeriCares has shipped more than $5 million in medical aid and relief supplies for the Nov. 8 typhoon – one of the worst storms on record.

“Health care facilities throughout the region are running critically low on essential medicines needed to treat disaster survivors,” said AmeriCares Vice President of Emergency Response Garrett Ingoglia. “With this shipment we are helping patients with chronic health problems access their medications, as well as ensuring medical professionals can treat disaster-related illnesses.”

AmeriCares had teams of relief workers on the ground facilitating aid deliveries and assessing needs within days of the disaster. The emergency response and global health organization quickly shipped enough medicine to treat 35,000 patients for three months. Subsequent shipments of medicines and relief supplies followed from the AmeriCares warehouses in Amsterdam and Connecticut.

AmeriCares has been delivering aid to the Philippines since 1985 and supports an established network of 150 health care facilities across the country, allowing it to quickly speed relief to disaster survivors. Over the years, the disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization has delivered more than $230 million in aid to the Philippines including relief supplies for survivors of the October earthquake and Typhoon Bopha in 2012.
