Stamford, Conn. – Dec. 18, 2013 – AmeriCares is delivering 60,000 doses of flu vaccine to help protect low-income and uninsured Americans from the flu this winter. The vaccines, donated by Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi, are headed to 237 safety net clinics and health centers in 39 states participating in AmeriCares U.S. Medical Assistance Program.
“Many of the patients who will benefit from these vaccines work jobs that do not offer health insurance or paid sick time. They literally cannot afford to spend a day in bed,” said Leslie McGuire, Director of AmeriCares U.S. Medical Assistance Program. “We are helping to ensure low-income and uninsured patients all across the country will be healthy enough to provide for their families this winter.”
AmeriCares has been rapidly expanding its U.S. Medical Assistance Program with support from the G.E. Foundation. The program provides donated medicines, vaccines and medical supplies to more than 600 free clinics, community health centers and health departments serving the uninsured and underinsured at 1,300 locations across the U.S. Over the past two years, 200 new safety-net partners have joined the program, and in the last year alone, AmeriCares tripled the value of its aid deliveries. The nonprofit global health and disaster relief organization made more than 3,000 shipments to U.S. clinics and health centers last year, providing $70 million in prescription and over-the-counter medicines as well as medical supplies for patients in need.
