MAP International Executive to Succeed Curt Welling
Stamford, Conn. – Jan. 6, 2014 – Michael J. Nyenhuis will succeed Curt Welling as President and Chief Executive Officer of AmeriCares on January 27. Nyenhuis, the current President and Chief Executive Officer of MAP International, was selected as the result of an international search launched in April after Welling announced plans to step down after 11 years at the helm of the global health and disaster relief organization.
Nyenhuis has spent the past 19 years with MAP International, based in Brunswick, Georgia – the last 14 as CEO. He joined the organization in 1995, serving as Chief Operating Officer and Director of Information Services before becoming CEO in 2000. Founded in 1954, MAP International is a global nonprofit organization that promotes the health of impoverished people around the world.
“On behalf of the AmeriCares Board of Directors, I am delighted to welcome Michael Nyenhuis as our next CEO. Michael has had a long and distinguished record of achievement at MAP International – an organization with aid programs similar to AmeriCares – and I am confident he will help us build on our more than 30-year history of bringing health and humanitarian care to millions of people in need,” said Dean Maglaris, chairman of AmeriCares Board of Directors. “Michael’s deep knowledge of global health will be very valuable as we expand upon the program growth realized during Curt Welling’s tenure.”
Under Welling’s leadership, AmeriCares became the world’s leading organization for delivering donated medicines and medical supplies. Last year alone AmeriCares provided more than $500 million in aid to more than 90 countries, including enough medicines to fill 14 million prescriptions.
“Following in the footsteps of AmeriCares founder Bob Macauley and Curt Welling is a great honor,” Nyenhuis said. “AmeriCares is well known for being one of the most effective and efficient nonprofits operating in the global humanitarian sector. Many know of its disaster response work and the critical role it plays in supporting health care facilities worldwide. I look forward to bringing my experience in global health and my expertise in leveraging financial donations with donated medicines and medical supplies to AmeriCares.”
Nyenhuis earned a Master of Business Administration from Emory University and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Media from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay.
