Stamford, Conn. – April 28, 2014 – AmeriCares is deploying an emergency response team to Arkansas to coordinate deliveries of medical aid and relief supplies for survivors of the deadly tornadoes that struck the South and Midwest last night. At least 14 people were reportedly killed in Arkansas alone, and dozens of homes were destroyed throughout the region.
“We have a relief team on the way and we are working with local partners to meet the immediate health needs of survivors,” said Garrett Ingoglia, AmeriCares vice president of emergency response. “We have medicines and relief supplies pre-positioned in our warehouse ready to be distributed to families in need.”
AmeriCares will have staff on the ground in Arkansas tonight to assess immediate needs and coordinate aid deliveries. In Kansas, AmeriCares is working with a partner organization to provide TDAP vaccines to protect first responders digging through the rubble. Relief workers have also been in contact with partner organizations throughout the South and Midwest with offers of assistance. Tornado watches remain in effect in parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Missouri and Tennessee.
AmeriCares has delivered medical relief and humanitarian assistance worldwide to millions affected by natural and man-made disasters for more than 30 years. The aid organization has a long history of responding to U.S. disasters including the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Joplin tornado in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. After a powerful EF5 tornado last May, AmeriCares delivered more than 50 aid shipments to the Oklahoma City area to help families recover.
