AmeriCares Honors BD with Power of Partnership Award

  • June 2, 2014

Stamford, Conn. – June 2, 2014 – AmeriCares has presented its annual Power of Partnership Award to BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) in recognition of the company’s outstanding commitment to helping disaster survivors and improving health in the developing world. BD, a leading global medical technology company, is a longtime supporter of the aid organization’s emergency response work and ongoing health programs for people in crisis, providing both product donations and financial support that allow health workers in under-resourced communities to provide quality care.

AmeriCares President and CEO Michael J. Nyenhuis presented the award today at the Healthcare Distribution Management Association’s (HDMA) Business and Leadership Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. AmeriCares and HDMA created the Power of Partnership Award to recognize medical manufacturing and distribution organizations that have shown exceptional dedication to expanding access to health care for disadvantaged populations.

“For 28 years, BD’s commitment to AmeriCares global health and emergency response programs has helped us improve health care for millions impacted by poverty and disaster worldwide,” Nyenhuis said. “Whether we are aiding typhoon survivors in the Philippines, or supporting U.S. clinics serving the uninsured, BD is always there.”

BD has been a steadfast supporter of the global health and disaster relief nonprofit since 1986, donating more than $25 million in products for AmeriCares work in 94 countries. In 2009, BD became a major sponsor of AmeriCares highly successful Health Workforce Safety Program that trained, equipped and protected 1,200 health workers in Tanzania. In the U.S., BD has donated more than 5 million pen needles and insulin syringes over the past five years for free and charitable clinics through AmeriCares U.S. Medical Assistance Program.

“BD is proud of our ever-evolving, 28-year partnership with AmeriCares as they enable BD to fulfill its purpose of ‘Helping all people live healthy lives,’” said Vincent A. Forlenza, BD Chairman, Chief Executive and President. “We are honored to receive the Power of Partnership Award.”

BD also provides staff and technical expertise to support AmeriCares aid programs. The company recently selected AmeriCares to participate in its employee engagement program for the next three years. This October, a team of BD experts will create an intensive 10-day training program at the AmeriCares Family Clinic in El Salvador, providing leadership training for staff as well as diabetes patient education and training in best diabetes management practices for medical staff. The clinic serves 26,000 patients annually from across the country.

“We congratulate BD, whose dedication to serving millions of people in need is a true example of the power of partnerships in the health care industry,” said HDMA President and CEO John M. Gray. “We are proud to support AmeriCares and their public health efforts — both at home and abroad.”
