As Hurricane Arthur continued to move northeast along the East Coast, AmeriCares emergency response experts are closely tracking the storm – the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season – and preparing to respond if needed. Late Thursday night, Arthur hit the North Carolina barrier islands as a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 100 mph, heavy rains and storm surges as high as 5 feet.
Our relief workers have reached out to 40 partner organizations in four coastal states alerting them we are prepared to deliver emergency medicines and relief supplies in the coming days. AmeriCares aid workers are also on stand-by, ready to deploy to the hardest hit communities at a moment’s notice.
“This storm carries very strong winds and heavy rain that can cause flooding and power outages,” said AmeriCares Vice President of Emergency Response Garrett Ingoglia. “We hope the forecasts are right, and that it only skirts the coast, but we are ready should it take a turn for the worse.”
