Humanitarian Aid Reaching Remote Pakistan Villages Devastated by Floods

The effect of recent monsoon flooding on the remote Pakistani village of Rasmaan, located about one mile from the border with India, did not make major news headlines.  But for the people who live there and in scores of other rural communities, the worst floods since 2010 took everything, killing hundreds and affecting 1.5 million people. 

When AmeriCares emergency response manager in Pakistan recently arrived in the village with a local partner organization to distribute relief supplies, it was the first assistance they had seen since the floods destroyed their homes in early September. For an 89-year-old lifelong resident and his wife, who lost their tiny piece of land and their cows (their only source of income), the relief kits were more than welcome.

“With this donation, there is still hope for me to restart my life” said Mohamad. “The contents of these kits are very useful. We can start our small kitchen again and will try to look after ourselves again. Thank you that you came so far to take care of us. God bless you”.

The emergency response team visited 7 villages in the area, distributing relief kits containing basic nonfood household items and family tents that will help approximately 1,400 people.

Since the floods in 2010, that affected one-fifth of Pakistan, AmeriCares has responded to a yearly cycle of flooding with distribution of humanitarian supplies and then aided in the recovery process by supporting the rebuilding and repair of local health facilities. During relief and recovery operations, we have developed strong relationships with several local organizations and continue to work with these partners to deliver ongoing medical and humanitarian aid to families in need across the country.

This year’s flooding has affected large areas of Pakistan as well as parts of Jammu and Kashmir.  AmeriCares is mounting relief efforts throughout the region to help the many survivors.
