Stamford, Conn. – June 8, 2015 – AmeriCares, in partnership with the Healthcare Distribution Management Association (HDMA), has presented its annual Power of Partnership Award to Bristol-Myers Squibb in recognition of its outstanding commitment to increasing access to medicine, health worker safety and improving the wellbeing of children worldwide. Bristol-Myers Squibb and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation are among AmeriCares most consistent supporters, providing both pharmaceutical products and financial support for the aid organization’s emergency response work and ongoing health programs in under-resourced communities.

AmeriCares President and CEO Michael J. Nyenhuis presented the award today at the HDMA’s Business and Leadership Conference in San Antonio, Texas. AmeriCares and HDMA created the Power of Partnership Award 11 years ago to recognize medical manufacturing and distribution organizations that have shown exceptional dedication to expanding access to health care for disadvantaged populations.

“AmeriCares depends upon the generosity of corporate donors to help people in need in more than 90 countries,” said Nyenhuis. “From product donations to targeted funding for pressing health needs, Bristol-Myers Squibb and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation have helped us make a profound difference for nearly 30 years.”

Since 1986, Bristol-Myers Squibb has provided AmeriCares with more than $348 million in product donations for distribution in 116 countries. In recent years, the company has extended its collaboration with AmeriCares to include donations from its affiliates in India, Germany, Austria and Spain.

“We are pleased to recognize Bristol-Myers Squibb for its outstanding commitment to helping those most in need,” said HDMA President and CEO John M. Gray. “The HDMA community has a long history of responding to emergencies, and we are united in our support of organizations like AmeriCares, who are able to deliver lifesaving aid to the most critical of populations.”

In addition to helping the global health and disaster relief nonprofit deliver medicines and medical supplies to disadvantaged populations, the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation has provided critical funding for its community health programs around the world. The foundation’s  aid includes sponsoring a diabetes diagnosis, treatment and patient education program in the Piura region of Peru and funding AmeriCares work with the Sanar Foundation, a leader in providing free comprehensive services to low-income families of children diagnosed with cancer in Colombia. The Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation also supports AmeriCares innovative health worker safety projects in Tanzania and India, which provide Hepatitis B vaccinations and training in safety techniques to medical professionals.

The Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation has long been a leader improving global health care, creating its SECURE THE FUTURE® initiative in 1999 to address HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. The groundbreaking initiative has since expanded its scope to prevent the transmission of tuberculosis and to address cervical and breast cancers among women living with HIV in eight African nations.

“When focusing on the health of vulnerable populations in challenging geographies, no one sector can do it alone,” says John Damonti, president, Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation and head of Corporate Philanthropy. “It is only through the partnership of government, business and civil society that progress can be made. We are proud to partner with AmeriCares from India to Tanzania to Nepal to help those who are desperately in need.”
