Americares Delivers Over 300 Tons of Medical Aid to Ukraine

Special Report Released Today Highlights Americares Support for Children and Adults Impacted by the War 

Stamford, Conn. – Feb. 15, 2023 – Americares has provided more than $70 million in aid over the past year to meet the health needs of displaced families and survivors of the war in Ukraine. Americares response focuses on the delivery of medicine and medical supplies, providing generators and heating equipment, supporting safety and protection and expanding mental health support. The full response activities are detailed in Americares Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis One-Year Report published today.  

Highlights of the response to date include:  

• Shipping more than 300 tons of medicine and relief supplies valued at more than $63 million to 32 partner organizations and first responders in Ukraine;  

• Supporting more than 17,000 individual crisis intervention sessions for internally displaced people, military personnel, veterans, and refugees with mental health issues;  

• Awarding more than $1 million in funding to provide heat and power to health facilities in Ukraine, including more than 50 generators; 

• And donating medicine and supplies valued at $3.3 million to 20 U.S-based volunteer medical teams traveling to Poland, Romania and Ukraine. 

“As we approach the one-year mark of the war, we recognize that more work has to be done, and we are committed to meeting the physical and mental health needs of those affected,” said Americares Director of Complex Emergencies Adam Keehn. “Americares is playing an important role supporting local grassroots organizations in Ukraine and neighboring countries assisting children and adults caught in the humanitarian crisis.” 

Ukraine’s health infrastructure has been decimated by the war. Over 700 attacks on Ukraine’s health care system have been reported since the start of the war, according to the World Health Organization. There is a critical need for medicine and medical supplies, including antibiotics, insulin, IV fluids, wound care supplies, labor and delivery supplies and trauma kits. Going forward, an Americares response team based in Krakow, Poland, will continue to support local organizations with medicine, medical and relief supplies and technical support.
