Stamford, Conn.Aug. 29, 2023 – In the year and a half since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Americares has provided more than $100 million in aid to meet the health needs of displaced families and survivors of the war. Americares response continues to focus on the delivery of medicine and medical supplies and expanding mental health support for survivors.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 1,100 attacks on Ukraine’s health care system have been reported since the start of the war, decimating the country’s health infrastructure. There continues to be a critical need for medicine and medical supplies, including antibiotics, insulin, IV fluids, wound care items, labor and delivery supplies and trauma kits. An Americares response team based in Krakow, Poland, continues to support local organizations with deliveries of life-saving medicines and medical supplies, emergency funding and technical support.

“As we mark another grim anniversary in this long-running humanitarian crisis, it’s clear that more work remains, and we are committed to supporting the health needs of affected families, host communities and those who have been internally displaced by the war,” said Americares Ukraine Response Field Team Lead Jake Wheeler.

An Americares shipment of medicines and medical supplies valued at $14 million recently arrived in Ukraine to support Razom Health, an Americares partner organization that supports hospitals and health care facilities serving families in Ukraine, bringing Americares total aid for the emergency to over $114 million. The shipment, which contained medications for hypertension, high cholesterol and COPD, as well as medical supplies and feminine hygiene products, was put to use immediately to protect the health of survivors caught in crisis.

Since the onset of the invasion, Americares has provided Razom Health with over 50 tons of medicines and medical supplies valued at over $26 million. Americares also provided Razom Health with more than $250,000 in emergency funding to purchase hospital-grade generators for medical facilities in Ukraine.

“In the heart of conflict, every gesture of support carries profound significance. The generous medical donations from Americares have not only allowed us to bolster local hospital operations and aid patients but have also sent a strong message of solidarity to the people of Ukraine,” said Razom Health Program Director Daniel Solchanyk. “As patients grapple with the harsh realities of war, the support from Americares assures them of a brighter and healthier future. Their generosity is a testament to the true spirit of humanitarian aid.”

Americares, a health-focused relief and development organization, has shipped more than 460 tons of medicines and relief supplies valued at more than $105 million to 35 partner organizations in Ukraine since the start of the war. In addition, Americares has awarded 100 emergency grants valued at more than $4.5 million to 61 organizations supporting those affected by the war in Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine. The organization has also supported volunteer medical teams traveling to Poland, Romania and Ukraine with more than $4.4 million worth of donated medicines and supplies.

Americares has professional relief workers ready to respond to disasters at a moment’s notice and stocks emergency medicine and supplies in warehouses in the United States, Europe and India that can be delivered quickly in times of crisis. The organization responds to approximately 30 natural disasters and humanitarian crises worldwide each year. Since its founding more than 40 years ago, Americares has provided more than $22 billion in aid to 164 countries, including the United States.
