Director, Complex Emergencies
Americares Director of Complex Emergencies Adam Keehn leads responses to disease outbreaks, famines, civil conflicts and international crises. He is responsible for deploying and managing emergency response field teams, coordinating large-scale deliveries of critical medicine and relief supplies to disaster areas and implementing recovery programs that meet survivors’ long-term health needs.
Keehn has played a key role in Americares multi-year response to the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. As Americares response efforts began in 2022, he spent months in Poland leading an Americares Emergency Response Team, coordinating shipments of emergency aid and working with local health partners to ensure survivors have access to lifesaving care.
Keehn brings to Americares more than 25 years of experience in the humanitarian sector. Over the years, he has been on the frontlines of several emergencies, including the 2014 Ebola crisis in West Africa, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the 2003 food crisis in Ethiopia and Hurricanes Sandy and Irma in the United States.
Prior to joining Americares in 2018, Keehn spent much of his career with Save the Children, where he served as the organization’s Hurricane Irma team leader and oversaw all aspects of the nonprofit’s response to that disaster. Keehn also oversaw program planning, reporting and a multimillion-dollar grant initiative as deputy director of Save the Children’s USAID-funded TOPS program. Over the years he has held several positions overseas including country director in Ethiopia, Mali and Burkina Faso, interim program director for Southern Africa, and program development and quality director in Liberia for Save the Children. Earlier in his career Keehn worked as a USAID Food for Peace monitor and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali, where he also opened the Save the Children U.S. office.
A leader in the humanitarian field, Keehn has completed extensive training in international NGO security and emergency response. He also completed an executive program for nonprofit leaders at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business in 2005.
Keehn earned a master’s degree in adult education and community development from Cornell University and a bachelor’s degree in English and French from Beloit College.
