Emergency Medical Officer

Dr. Prabu Selvam

Americares Emergency Medical Officer Dr. Prabu Selvam is the medical advisor for Americares Emergency Response Team, ensuring medical humanitarian standards are met and integrated across Americares response and recovery programs.

He provides medical oversight for Americares emergency medical teams that deploy to disaster-affected communities and serves as a technical advisor for Americares emergency response programs Americares responds to more than 35 natural disasters and humanitarian crises worldwide each year, establishes long-term recovery projects and brings preparedness programs to communities vulnerable to disasters.

Dr. Selvam is also an emergency medicine physician at Frederick Health Hospital in Frederick, Md.

Prior to joining Americares in 2023, he served as an active-duty officer in the U.S. Air Force and medical director of the Langley Air Force Base Emergency Department in Hampton, Va., where he deployed on a mobile surgical team and served on a taskforce coordinating departmental and hospital-wide COVID-19 operations.

Board-certified in emergency medicine, Dr. Selvam earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University, a master’s degree in epidemiology and international public health from Johns Hopkins University and a medical degree from the University of Vermont. He is fluent in English and Tamil and proficient in Spanish.
