Our Work in Colombia

Colombia faces significant challenges in increasing access to quality health care, shaped by its diverse geography, rising poverty and one of the world’s largest internally displaced populations, resulting from decades of political instability, insecurity and conflict in the region.

Americares has been supporting health care in Colombia since 1985, improving access to medicines and health services for underserved communities. Americares also responds to disasters, providing emergency medical aid and supporting recovery efforts for communities affected by crises.

Responding to Emergencies in Colombia

Colombia’s location along the Pacific Ring of Fire makes it highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including earthquakes, flooding and volcanic eruptions. Compounding these risks, widespread poverty limits access to essential health care for many, increasing the likelihood of untreated illnesses and worsening health outcomes.

In 2024, Americares Emergency Response Team in Colombia mobilized to support communities impacted by severe flooding in La Mojana, La Guajira and El Choco. The team distributed hygiene kits in the hardest-hit communities. In 2025, Americares Colombia launched a response to the mounting crisis in Cucutá, Norte de Santander, where thousands of people fled their homes due to conflict in the region. Americares Colombia provided displaced people with mental health and psychosocial support, including individual and group therapy sessions.

Care for Migrants in Colombia

Between 2018 and 2025, Americares operated primary care clinics, mobile health clinics and a health education site in Colombia to meet the ongoing demand for primary care services and access to medicines for families fleeing the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela and other underserved populations who lack access to health services. The clinics operated in response to changing health needs, ultimately providing care in 12 departments across Colombia. The clinics closed in January 2025.

During their operation, Americares clinics provided 1,116,351 medical consultations in Colombia, delivered enough medicine for more than 64 million prescriptions, conducted 195,279 psychological consultations and carried out 9,553 health workshops.

While the clinics were operating, Americares staff in Colombia also assisted patients with enrolling in Colombia’s public health system, ensuring long-term access to care for Venezuelan families, migrants from other countries and host communities.

Water and Sanitation Projects

Americares improves access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene in indigenous Wayúu communities in La Guajira and schools in Atlántico. The projects focus on infrastructure, community engagement and environmental sustainability. Through this comprehensive approach, 4,653 students benefited from upgraded water and sanitation facilities, and 10,404 additional individuals were reached through awareness campaigns. Americares also conducted five water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) promotion campaigns, trained students as WASH ambassadors and empowered people to raise awareness about safe water and hygiene practices. In La Guajira, over 1,000 people gained improved access to water, while 1,500 individuals strengthened their knowledge of water and hygiene.
