Americares is responding to the catastrophic flooding in Hawaii that has inundated communities and caused widespread damage in Oahu and parts of Maui County.
More than 5,000 people were evacuated after up to 50 inches of rain fell in 10 days, according to Hawaii Gov. Josh Green. As of March 20, emergency responders in Oahu reported rescuing more than 200 people. According to local reports, a hospital in Maui sustained damage due to flooding.
Americares is providing hygiene kits and medical supplies to Hawaii HOME Project, a local health partner in Honolulu that is supporting people affected by the disaster. These supplies will help meet the most immediate health needs of survivors, prevent the spread of illness and ensure our partner on the ground has what they need to continue caring for patients during this critical time.
With more rain expected, the threat of additional flooding remains high, complicating response and recovery efforts as area residents return home and begin the difficult task of cleaning up the damage and rebuilding their communities.
